The Wish Giver
Recently, I read a book called “The Wish Giver”. It is a great book with a lot of excitement. I really enjoyed this book. The author is Bill Brittain. The moral of this story is to be careful what you wish for.
This book is about Stew Meat (The narrator) who meets a strange man named Thaddeus Blinn in a carnival tent. He notices something unusual about Thaddeus Blinn that his eyes glow like a cat. Stew Meat sees three kids in the tent who is Polly, Rowena, and Adam. Thaddeus Blinn sells the 4 of them a card with a red spot on it, for 50 cents each and says that all they have to do is to press their finger on the red spot and say a wish and it will come true.
Polly’s (a girl with few friends) wish is to be popular. The wish comes true but she croaks like a frog whenever she says something rude to others. Only when she has not made any insults for a while, the croaking stops. This lets her wish to be granted. When she croaks in the middle of class that causes her to become popular. Rowena makes a wish of her boyfriend Henry Piper who she can only see twice a year to “Set roots down in Coven Tree and never leave again!" The wish is granted and Henry's feet become rooted to the ground, and he slowly turns into a tree. Henry tells her that he never actually liked her, and only flirted with her so that her father would buy more of his items. Rowena and a friend Sam look for a way to make Henry a human again. Adam, who lives in a farm, wishes for the farm to be full of water because the farm is so dry. When they dig a hole in the soil, a huge geyser shoots out. Adam is happy of the water at first, but the water keeps coming out, flooding the entire farm. I am going to stop the story here so you can read the book to find out what happens next.
My favourite part of the book is when Polly first croaked like a frog. I liked this part because it was funny at first until I found out it was a curse from the card. My least favourite part is when, Henry turns into a tree. Even though when the farm flooded and Polly croaking is pretty sad too, Henry gets hurt, stuck, cold and hungry when he could be warm and cozy but in Polly and Adam’s story no one gets hurt. Also because he was stuck to the ground, Rowena gets her feelings hurt by Henry but also really worried about him. This story reminds me of the story “Be Careful What You Wish For” because “Be Careful What You Wish For” is about a woman who wished for a new car. Later that night her husband died. Using the insurance money, she got a new car. Both stories are similar because someone made a wish and because of this wish something bad happened to their lives.
This book is a really great book. I really recommend it. I would give this book four stars because it was good but a little boring. I recommend this book 7+.
