Bud, Not Buddy

Recently I read a book called “Bud, Not Buddy” it was a great book with a lot of adventure and excitement. This book has won a couple of awards like the Newberry Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award.

This book is about Bud Caldwell, the main character (who hates being called Buddy) who runs away from the orphanage to try to find his father. His mom left him clues like flyers of Herman E. Calloway and his band. Bud thinks the flyers will lead him to his father or probably Herman E. Calloway is his father. Once he decides to find his father no problems will stop him. Not fear, not vampires, not hunger (almost) not even Herman E. Calloway. I will stop the story here so you can read to find out what happens next.

The most exciting part is when Bud finds Herman E. Calloway. I would change the part of the story when Bud kisses a girl on his way to find his father because it is so random and has nothing to do with the story. The author should have skipped that part of the story. This story reminds me of the book “The Silver Chair” by C.S. Lewis because they are both about someone trying to find someone. Bud tried to find his dad and Eustace and Jill (characters from “The Silver Chair”) tried to find their friend’s son.

Even though this story is fiction, it could be a real life situation that could be happening all over the world. Sometimes we cannot be so lucky like Bud and find the person you want to find. We should be lucky we are not in a situation like Bud’s and I thank Christopher Paul Curtis the author of this book for teaching us that. Any way, this was a breath taking, exciting and great book that I would give four and a half stars to. I really enjoyed and love this book.
