First of all, let me say that this is one of my favourite books. I first read it when I was 9 years old and I still love it now. This book tells a tale of a girl who is headstrong and smart but is cursed by a spell. This book tells a tale of magic. This book tells a tale of never giving up even though you are on the edge of breaking down. This book is "Ella Enchanted".
"Ella Enchanted" is a Newbery Honor book, a ALA Notable Children's Book, a School Library Journal Best Book, and a Publishers Weekly Best Book, and has been made into a movie too. It is written by Gail Carson Levine, an amazing author that is known for writing fantasy books for children and young adults (check out her other books like Fairest, The Two Princesses of Bamarre and Dave at Night). This was Levine's first book that she wrote and also the most popular.
"Ella Enchanted" is a story based on the classic tale of Cinderella. Meet Ella, our stubborn, independent, and kind hero. Did I mention she had horrible luck? When she was just a baby, Ella was given a "gift" by fairy Lucinda to always be obedient and follow whatever someone orders her around. When she was 15, Ella's mother died leaving her with her greedy father. Then, in comes Prince Charming. Well, if you call Prince Charming a prince called Charmont who has curly hair and swarty skin, and has a nice and humorous personality, then yes, he is Prince Charming. And like the stories, Ella falls for the prince. But not yet!
First, she has to endure going to finishing school with her "ugly stepsisters" who aren't really that close with each other but just as ugly and cruel, Hattie and Olive. There, she meets Arieda, a fellow student, and becomes close companions with her but life isn't all happy and exciting. Ella has to go through days of balancing plates on her head, learning about what kind of jam the King likes, and Hattie bossing her around for she learned of the curse from Lucinda. Finally, Ella couldn't bear it any longer and runs away from finishing school to meet her father at a giants' wedding, but of course, before getting there, she just had to get captured by ogres. I told you, she has bad luck!
Then of course, Prince Charmont comes along, but wait! Ella doesn't need help. She proves that girls can be just as helpful as boys and manages to prefect the ogres' way of persuading people to do as they want, and escapes by herself. However, having a few knights with swords ready to be your bodyguards boosts your confidence by quite a lot. Ella finally got to the wedding and found Lucinda, but of course, her bad luck comes again. Shot down by a fairy with abnormally small feet when she asks for her curse to be removed. She travels back to her manor and meets Prince Char again. After having a slide down the grand staircase which by the way, has a nasty curve in it, they become friends, and write each other letters often.
Ella's father leaves to work and she is imprisoned by her step mom, Dame Olga. She is treated no better than a slave and has to wash dishes and clean the floor, but worst of all, she has to read stories to a confused Olive who has an unhealthy obsession with cake. And money. There is a bright side to her life though. Ella and Char fell in love over the letters exchanged by them. However, being the unselfish girl she is which is really unhelpful for herself sometimes, she thinks about all the aspects first. What kind of kingdom would their home be if the queen was forced to obey every order she was given? I'll give you a hint. Not a very happy one. After thinking everything through, Ella pretended that she was getting married and never got the letter from Char that confessed his love.
Ella and Char in the Movie
I'll leave it to your imagination to guess what happened after but remember the classic tale of Cinderella. The story was based on it after all. If you really wanted to know the ending, I suggest you buy the book or borrow it from the library. The ending is quite full of suspense and ties the entire book together.
Overall, I think this book is amazing. Sure, it's based on Cinderella, a movie that everyone knows, but in some ways, this book is even better. Instead of having the prince rescue the princess, Ella shows that princesses can be even more brave and determined to save their land. I recommend this to anyone who is sick of reading books where the boys do all of the saving and the girls just sit in the sidelines watching. All of the girls I know who read this book loved it and even some of the boys. I think people who are aged 8 and up are the most suitable age to read this, but I might be wrong. Remember, this is just my opinion.
"Ella Enchanted" proves that anything is possible, especially in a world as crazy as hers. Fantasy and humor, bold and daring, everything is possible in a land where Ella exists.
