For this report I am going to use letter format because I kind of dislike and disagree with the storyline in this story. The book is So Far From The Bamboo Grove, by Yoko Kawashima Watkins. By the way, I don't recommend this book to other people because there are inappropriate and violent scenes in this book.
Dear Yoko Kawashima Watkins,
Hi, my name is Alex. I'm in grade 5. I was reading a book that you wrote called So Far From The Bamboo Grove, and I didn't quiet like it. I didn't like it because in the storyline, it said that Japan defeated China in WWII, which was totally not true, and in some parts there were disturbing scenes, and I didn't like them. I have some questions for you:
-Why did you write this book?
-What was the meaning of this book?
-What was the moral of this book?
-Why did you describe those terrifying scenes?
-Did you think it was good?
Sincerely,
Alex
As I said before, I did not like this book, and do not recommend it to anyone, but if you want to read this book, you could. I will describe how I felt reading the book. I felt surprised, sad, mad, bad for some of the characters, and just plain bad. That is my report on this book.
hey Alex, while words convey definition, sentences deliver meanings and emotions, isn't it what writing is all about.
ReplyDeletei think your report successfully accomplishes this goal-not only informs readers main ideas of the writing, but also exhibits your emotions, which is anger and confusion in this case. i especially like your direct questions in the letter because they hit the point and leave us (readers) wonder how the author might answer these critical questions.
very well done!
I disagree with you, Alex. One, the book was a memoir. Do you know what that is? It means that the ENTIRE book actually happened to Yoko. So everything in the book was accurate and true! And you misread the book, because Japan did not defeat China! And of course there were disturbing scenes, you are reading a book about WORLD WAR ||!!! War is ugly. Don't forget it. I mean you don't have to like it, you can express your opinion, - But really please in the future make sure you understand something before you go off about it. The is already enough hate to go around. It's good that you feel empathy for the characters - everybody did. I personally thought that this was a beautiful novel and so was the sequel, My brother, My sister, and I. My closing statement is bravo Yoko, you're a gifted writer and I would recommend this heartfelt book to anyone.
